Help with Downloaded CAD Models

Help on using the .zcm file type

If you received a zcm file and you're not sure how to use it.

Help with “unzipping” your CAD request

If you are unsure how to extract your CAD models from their compressed format

If your extracted files have an unfamiliar extension, you may need to follow special instructions in order to run a macro.

Help on using the .zcm file type:

The Online CAD Configurator offers the option of selecting an alternate file type for emailing a CAD file to a requester. Normally, the file extension of a CAD request would be a .zip extension to compress the CAD files for quicker delivery times. However, many companies are restricting the types of files that will be accepted by having firewalls setup to not allow certain file types (.exe, .zip, etc.) through due to the potential risk of a virus. To work around this issue, we offer the alternate file extension, .zcm, which shouldn’t be rejected or deleted when sent through email unless the email filter is blocking the zip file type (instead of the ".zip" extension) then this alternate method won’t work. See picture below under, "Zip File Extension" highlighted in red.

Once received, you have two options for opening the .zcm file.

  1. You can simply right click on the .zcm file, select rename, and change the extension to .zip. You will be asked,“Are sure you want to change it”, and answer “yes”. Now the file is simply a standard zipped file that can be opened with either Winzip of Pkzip. For more information on how to use .zip files or on where to get this software, see the section below on “Help with unzipping your CAD request”.

  2. You can also use windows file association to assign the .zcm file to be a file type your system “understands” and will be able to open automatically without having to rename the file every time (as long as you have either Winzip or Pkzip installed on your system). By simply right clicking on a .zcm file and choosing, “open with” and then, “Choose Program…”

A dialogue box will come up with a list of programs to choose from to open your file. You will want to scroll down until you see one that reads, “Winzip Executable”, as shown in the picture. Select this program, then check the box at the bottom so your system will know in the future how to open these files. Press “OK” and you are finished. Now when you try to open a .zcm file your system will automatically use Winzip to open the file saving you the step of having to rename the file every time.

Help with “unzipping” your CAD request:

The attached file(s) has/have been "zipped" or compressed to make the size of the file smaller, allowing for a quicker download. In order to "unzip" the attached file(s), unzipping software is required. If you do not have this software, then can go to one of the following websites to obtain unzipping software (for free) from either PKZip® (http://www.pkware.com) or WinZip® (http://www.winzip.com) Both of these products will enable you to "unzip" the attached CAD file(s).

Some CAD model requests will be delivered as a macro file rather than in a regular model format. These macro files are programs that are run within your CAD environment and create your model file on the fly. If the file type you selected happens to be a macro file, then you will receive a link in your email directing you to a site offering step-by-step instructions for running the macro and creating your CAD model. Below is a list of the CAD formats that are delivered as macros rather than actual model files.
